    Description

Offering for your consideration is this Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) reproduction of the large bowl made at the Sandwich glass-works on Cape Cod about 1835.  According to the information provided by MMA, each reproduction was hand-pressed in an individual mold hand-carved in iron.  In order to capture the brilliance of the original glass, it was necessary to re-discover the precise production used by the original craftsman.  Although slow and costly the result was a unique achievement in re-creating early American glass.  Waves, bubbles, hairline ridges of glass and similar indications of hand production is characteristic to each bowl.
It has been suggested that the bold pattern worked in the glittering glass may have been inspired by Halley's Comet, so these bowls are normally referred to as Halley's Comet Bowl.  These bowls were reproduced into the 1960's and measure 10.5" Diameter x 2.5" Deep.  This particular item is free of nicks, chips, stains, cracks, repairs or utensil marks.  The one scratch I mentioned in the condition description is probably one of the production marks described above.  I bought this bowl at a certified estate sale and was pleasantly surprised to find typed information on the back side of the Certificate of Authenticity (see photo).  I don't know if these bowls were produced as early as 1951 as mentioned in the information but I am led to believe this one must have been.  If I had the expertise and time, it would be very interesting to further research this particular shimmering and sparkling vintage bowl that was present to Mrs. Charles W. Green.
The bowl will come in the box that it came in which is in poor condition.  I will however set the bottom of the box inside of the lid so I can wrap the bowl more securely.  There is also some yellowed and crinkled tissue paper in the box.
